For assessing cable rating with regard to heating, soil thermal resistivity (STR) measurements are taken at proposed cable depth  using a  Thermal Properties Analyser.   This is fitted with a 1.27 mm diameter probe sensor using the transient line heat source method.  The probe is inserted into a 40 mm diameter hand auger borehole and using a ‘slide rod’ system the probe sensor is located into the soil at required depths.  The STR  is measured over a 90 second period and results displayed in units as meter-degrees C per watt (m C W-1).
